Ad Hoc Marketing Always Fails

A failure to plan is a plan to fail. Online everything is so easy to do. It's just takes a few seconds to click over there and add this widget to you blog and a few more to add another friend to a social networking site. Unfortunately, this leads to wasted time and the important things to your business never getting accomplished. If you don't have a marketing plan for your online business, I can almost guarantee you are struggling. In this article we're going to cover some basics on how to develop your own marketing plan and make the internet work for you.

First, you need to know the tasks you need to be doing to market your products. Are you going to focus on social networking or PPC? Maybe you'll optimize your sites for the search engines or an affiliate army. Come up with a list of no more than 15-20 ways you want to market your products. Make sure they're tasks. Something like «Front Page Of Digg» is actually a lot of other tasks - writing intriguing articles, networking with other Diggers, etc. List them all in a spreadsheet.

Next, rank each task. Rate each task on a scale from 1-5 on how important or effective each task is. If you're promoting a blog, blog commenting might rank a five, as would submitting to blog carnivals. Networking on video web sites might rank a one. Initially you need to decide from your own experience or, if you're unsure, use other's experience to how effective each task is toward meeting your marketing goals. Make sure you rank each one honestly. A list of all fives is not going to help you when you go to plan out the month ahead. We all want to do everything, but most of us are limited by the time we can spend on each task.

On to actually building the plan for the next month. Limit yourself to five day work weeks for four weeks to start. Take the ranked list and start putting the tasks ranked five into your calendar first. I suggest using Wednesday for the fives, with overflow onto Tuesday or Thursday. These days are least likely to be disrupted by holidays or long weekends and thus will increase the likelihood they are finished each week. Tasks ranked five will be done every single week. Once you have filled in the fives, insert the fours and threes more toward the edges of the week and most likely only done every other week. Next come the twos and ones and they will be done on Mondays and Fridays and at most once a month. Once the calendar is finished you should see a clear pattern of spending the most time on the fives and the least on the ones.

The next step is to ensure you take action. Put your plan to use. Make sure it's hanging somewhere you can see it everyday and do the allotted task for the day before you do anything else. Put off checking email, phone messages, surfing, gossiping until the tasks are done. Then you can relax and do some other tasks for the rest of the day. But, only do the task allotted on the days you specify. Do not get caught commenting on forums or blogs on the days when you haven't allocated the task because these things, while important, are serious time drains.

At the end of the first month, review your plan. Ask yourself, which tasks moved me closer to my goals and which ones did not? Which ones need a while longer to come to fruition and which ones are just complete duds? Go back to your original list and change the rankings for each of your tasks. Then revisit your plan and based on the new rankings, add or delete instances of tasks. Also, if you have issues with writing on Mondays, for example, and those tasks aren't being accomplished then move those tasks around so they are accomplished. Keep refining your plan month after month and then start outsourcing the tasks making you the most money.

Making a marketing plan isn't very difficult if you take it step by step. And having a plan is very often the difference between success and failure. So start planning for your success today!

3 Ideas To Help You Quit Your Job

Recently my online business has started making enough money to enable me to leave my job and strike out entirely on my own. I have had to work hard to be able to get to this point, but I attribute my ability to leave my job to the 3 things below (they're things you can do too):

1. Low expense lifestyle. My family has moved and managed to reduce our expenses and rent to zero. Insurance, groceries and petrol are now our biggest expenses. Try to tackle the expenses with a once off downside in exchange for an ongoing upside. Avoid cutting expense where they require the opposite.

2. Give yourself time. I've had to spend a few hours each day working on the business in order to get to this point. This meant I had to reprioritize a few things. Easy to eliminate things like TV and sleeping in were out. Just those 2 things enabled me to gain the skills I needed to start earning a basic level of income before ever taking the risk of going out on my own.

3. Have a backup plan in place. I made sure I didn't burn any bridges and did my work until the very last day of my job, just to make sure I'm welcome back. My backup plan is very simple. Go back to my former employer and contract with them for 3-6 months. The money I make during that time is enough to tide me over for an entire year. Find something you could do in order to make ends meet if things don't go as well as you hope. Keep it close to you to give yourself the courage to strike out on your own.

Those are the 3 things I did in order to build my skills and reduce my fears to the point where I confidently struck out on my own. They are really easy to do but they may be emotionally difficult, especially if you are addicted to TV or really tied to a certain area. If striking out on your own is your number 1 priority, doing the 3 things above will speed you on your way.

Online Business Success Through Failure

I started practicing Aikido years ago. When I walked onto the mat, I felt awkward and confused. I was horrible. Bad. Terrible. Nothing ended up in the right place. I couldn't fall, roll, turn, attack or keep my balance. My techniques resembled a bad stop motion film with strobe effects.

In Aikido, all of your instinctive reactions are wrong. It takes a lot of practice to overcome the basic instincts of avoiding punches and kicks, instead stepping into them. Instead of a strong hold being a loss, it becomes an opportunity to introduce your attacker to the ground, suddenly.

An internet business is much the same. Your first product is probably going to be horrible. Let's just be honest here. It will squeak and whine and you'll say too little in some parts and too much in others. Your first sales page will most likely be the same. Benefits instead of features? Not likely in a first draft! Your first posts will be weak and your first articles probably won't be all that and a bag of chips either. You'll struggle for traffic and sales will be dismal.

But it's important you do them AND you release them. What you're looking for at this time is feedback. It's similar to the time I was performing a technique (poorly) and my partner thought I should have been doing it better. So she (all 5' 90lbs of her) countered and introduced me to the mat, sharply. In an online business: Did the sales page convert? Where is the traffic coming from? How can I get more? Am I getting a lot of returns? What could I have done better? Each time did I survive and learn my lesson? Yes. Have I had similar lessons since then? Of course, both in Aikido and in my online business. Improvement is the key. Focus on getting better, not how terrible you are today.

Here's 3 reasons why being bad at something is good:

1. For the ideas. Everything you have problems doing is a potential product/blog post/article - once you find an answer. Can't do something in WordPress? Build the plugin yourself and sell it on to others. Did you find a nifty combo of techniques for bringing traffic to your site? Create an e-book. Don't understand what FTP is? There's a blog post. My suggestion: If you're having problems with something - WRITE IT DOWN! Keep it in a journal or a simple txt document. I personally keep a list of product ideas in a Writeboard in Basecamp.

2. You get better at it. Even the master was once a beginner. Leonardo Da Vinci started out drawing stick figures. But he drew those figures and then drew something more complex, until he was able to paint the Sistine Chapel. You don't get better my reading, you get better by practicing. My suggestion: Consider every action between now and whenever it is you consider yourself a master to be practice and for fun. If it's for fun, there's no pressure to do it well. Just do it better.

3. It's fun. Perhaps it's just me, but I find learning fun. I've learned you can't learn about things your already a master of, so if you're learning, you're going to be doing it badly. There isn't a single person who is good at everything. So make learning fun. My suggestion: Kids find most everything interesting. Adopt a child like attitude towards all the tasks you're faced with. When you learn something let out a big AHA! Then do a little dance.

So get out there and be horrible at something. If you keep at it, in a couple of months/years, you'll actually be good at it. That's how the masters got to be masters.

Brainstorm Your Way To Internet Success

Brainstorming is a session of time where you record every idea you have for a particular subject, topic, product, article, etc.

Brainstorming sessions can be on anything. Want to figure out what to write about for your blog? Brainstorm it! I'm going to give you a few rules to having an effective brainstorming session.

1. Define the problem in broad terms - Do not build in assumptions or artificial constraints into the question(s) you are asking. Make the question broad enough to allow the generation of many ideas. Instead of «How do I pick up an egg to move it to X?» ask - «How can an egg move to location X?». The former inserts the assumption of picking up - the latter allows for the ideas: allow it hatch and allow the chick to walk to the final position. The question will determine the creativity and uniqueness of the ideas produced during the brainstorming session.

2. There are no limitations on ideas - Throw the laws of physics out the window, open up your business to your personal life. This is not the stage for evaluation. Do not let the phrase - «Come On, Let's Be Serious» be said during a brainstorming session. Serious is for later. Crazy and idea generation is for now. Crazy ideas will spark tangents that may produce the ideal answer for you and your team, if you nip those ideas in the bud at the beginning you may never reach the ideal solution.

3. Set yourself a time limit and not an idea limit. Allow yourself 20 minutes to come up with as many ideas as you can rather than the first 100. The really interesting ideas only come after you exhausted the ordinary ones. Allow yourself time to break though to those ideas, but don't create stress or force the ideas by putting a number of ideas you must produce. If you say you want 500 ideas and you are still struggling with generating ideas after 4 hours - you aren't doing yourself any favors by continuing. Limit the time you spend and come back later if necessary.

4. Write everything down - everything needs to be recorded so it can be returned to and recorded during a later evaluation phase. As above, nothing should be evaluated at this stage. If you find yourself not recording ideas, it's because you're evaluating them. Stop evaluating and start writing! This also helps if you need to return or restart a brainstorming session. You'll know where you left off and can pick up threads started earlier. Find a tool where you can record all the ideas, fast. Speed is essential, once you're on a roll, you won't want to stop.
